Kilimanjaro Kitlist

Whichever route you’re planning to trek, Kilimanjaro requires a range of essential gear to keep you warm and comfortable… Because of the different temperate zones on Kili, you need a range of clothing to cope as you may encounter everything from hot and sunny weather to wind and rain, to sub-zero temperatures. Luckily, you’ll have porters to carry your kitbag in which you will keep your sleeping gear and any clothing you’re not wearing, leaving you free to carry the essentials in your daypack. If you’re trekking the Western Breach (as we did in issue 37/Mar ’13) then you’ll also need … Read more »

T&M team summits Kili via Western Breach

T&M team summits Kili via Western Breach

The first Trek & Mountain reader expedition ended in success this week, with all 6 members of the team summiting Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru peak on 29th January. The expedition, sponsored by leading outdoor brand Helly Hansen, took the most direct and toughest route up the mountain, the Umbwe route, before ascending to the crater rim by the infamous Western Breach, the spectacular but ‘least safe’ area on the mountain. However, the upside of choosing  this route was the magnificent scenery of the Western Breach and also the lack of other trekkers encountered during the trek. The Western Breach was closed for several years because of the dangers posed by rockfall, and although it is … Read more »

Kili The Hard Way blog – Brecon Beacons Training Weekend

Team member Liz Miall writes about the last training weekend before the team heads off for Tanzania… Friday 4th January Christmas is all but done and dusted, the decorations are mostly down and only remnants of Christmas cake and the odd strawberry Quality Street remain. 2013 is heralded in with gusto and for me, a certain amount of trepidation because now it’s full steam ahead for Kili The Hard Way! To show we really mean business The Team had arranged a training weekend in the Brecon Beacons so once again I find myself heading north up the M5 after work on Friday, shifting … Read more »

Kili The Hard Way blog – Snowdonia training weekend

By Kili team-member Liz Miall   MINUS 2 MONTHS – 17TH–18TH NOVEMBER I thought this was going to be a bit of an assessment/selection weekend for Kili The Hard Way 2013 sponsored by Helly Hansen, but it turns out no – we’re in! The itinerary for the weekend starts at 7pm with a briefing, meet our leader for the weekend and go through kit and equipment for the expedition. My first fail – I’m unable to leave work until 5pm, I will miss the whole evening session and will be lucky to arrive at our base, The Bryn Tyrch Inn before closing. The … Read more »
