Polartec celebrates the use of one billion plastic bottles in their fabrics

Polartec has announced that they’ve used one billion’s worth of clear plastic bottles in the production of fabric used by major brands such as Rab, Montane, Mountain Equipment, Patagonia and Norrona.

Since 2003, Polartec has been recycling plastic bottles and using them to create fabric used in outdoor gear. In 2010, they partnered with Unifi to produce high quality recycled fleece. Together they created REPREVE 100 which uses a yarn created from 100 percent clear plastic bottles.

“In the US over 40 billion plastic bottles are destined for landfill this year. One fortieth of this total amount seems a drop in the ocean but it’s a start,” claims Alessandro Perseo, Polartec European Marketing Manager. “We are keen to continue our upward trend and increase our commitment to make better use of what’s already been used. Here’s to the next billion.”
