The Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) will run a series of countrywide winter safety lectures next month, encouraging walkers and climbers to stay safe in the Scottish mountains this winter.

Led by MCofS Mountain Safety Adviser Heather Morning, the talks aim to improve people’s awareness and knowledge of challenges brought about by winter conditions, including navigation, equipment, route choice, avalanches and adverse weather. A professional mountaineer for 20 years and an active member of the Cairngorms Mountain Rescue Team, Heather’s practical safety advice will accompany mountain photography and tips on how to adapt outdoor skills and techniques for winter expeditions.

Lectures will be held at Tiso and Cotswold Outdoor outlets from November 26 – December 11, with talks beginning at 7.30pm. Locations will include Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen, Perth and Edinburgh – with funds raised being donated to the Mountain Safety Trust. Two further talks will also take place in Aviemore next February.

Talks at Tiso stores are free, Costwold charge £2 which goes directly to the charity. Bookings should be made in advance by contacting either venue by email.
