Doug Scott and Gavin Bate: from egotism to atruism

On 9th October, mountaineers Doug Scott and Gavin Bate will be giving a talk at Oxford Brookes University entitled “From egotism to altruism: two mountaineers’ journey into social entrepreneurship”.

Doug and Gavin have both climbed some of the world’s highest peaks, but have also dedicated themselves to lives of activism, promoting social entrepreneurship to support those in vulnerable communities worldwide. Doug’s mountaineering achievements are legendary, but he has long recognised that these achievements crucially relayed on the support of local mountain people, porters and Sherpas.  In 1998 he therefore founded the charity Community Action Nepal which today has over 40 on-going community welfare projects reaching 250,000 people, including  operating  nine schools, seven health posts and building two porter overnight shelters.

Gavin similarly began climbing for personal fulfilment but later put his experience to good use by setting up his own charity called Moving Mountains in the early 90’s, using funds raised from his mountain climbs to put children through school. The charity became registered in 2001 and is now a large concern with a number of related NGO’s and a large staff managing multiple developmental projects.

The talk will combine narration and stunning photography of Doug’s and Gavin’s climbing achievements with an exploration of the drive and motivation that lead them to their social entrepreneurship endeavours.

Tickets for the event cost £15 (or £10 concessions) and you can book them at:
