Trek marks Everest 60th anniversary

If you’ve been thinking about going on an Everest Base Camp trek for some time, then 2013 is as good a time to do it as it’s the 60th anniversary of Ed Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s 1953 summit. There are sure to be plenty of companies offering ‘anniversary treks’, but we’ve just had details of one of them – a May 24 departure with The Adventure Company.

This is how they describe the trip: “After a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, travellers will trek to Namche Bazaar before taking the ancient Tibetan trade route to Sherpa Tenzing’s home village of Thame for a special celebratory Sherpa dinner and festivities. After a night in the village, the group will visit the school which Hillary founded in Khumjung, before continuing to Everest Base Camp.

“Led by an experienced Everest summitter, the special 18-day trek departs on 24 May 2013 and offers travellers the opportunity to reach Everest Base Camp, experience five of the 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Nepal and take part in a unique anniversary celebration. It costs from £1,959 per person, including international and domestic flights, hotel and teahouse accommodation, English-speaking guides and local porters. A maximum of 16 people will be able to join the anniversary trek and travellers who book by 31 January 2013 quoting the promotional code 9566 can save £100 per person.”

Well it certainly sounds like a very special trip, and an already terrific trek can only be made even more special by the celebrations marking 60 years since that first ascent. There are, of course, may other Everest BC treks available, so do check with other leading trekking companies to see what’s available.
