Skiers and snowboarders can take to the slopes early this year, following the decision of a Scottish ski centre to open some of its runs earlier than usual.

The CairnGorm Mountain ski facility, located close to Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands, was able to open its Ciste runs last Saturday due to prolonged heavy snowfall in the area.

Of the opening, CairnGorm Mountain posted on its twitter page: ”Thanks to all who visited us over the opening weekend. Great snow and weather conditions enjoyed by all. Forecast is looking very windy for the coming days, however further snow fall at higher levels is expected.”

National body Ski-Scotland claim last year’s ski season to have been one of the busiest in years, with 290,996 skier days between November 2012 and May 2013. The CairnGorm Mountain centre is one of just five ski facilities in Scotland, others include slopes at Glencoe, Glenshee, Nevis Range and The Lecht.
