Taking you truly off the beaten path is this trek from Mountain Kingdoms. This region has only been open to trekkers since 1988 and requires a special permit to enter. You’ll be following Peter Matthiessen’s journey in search of the elusive snow leopard made famous in his book ‘The Snow Leopard’.
Trekking north from Juphal, you will enter the Phoksundo National Park. You will then cross Kang La and Crystal Mountain, eventually arriving at Shey Gompa, a remote 11th century monastery. On this trek, you’ll meet locals in some of the most isolated villages of Upper Dolpo, many of them still wearing traditional Tibetan-style clothes.
