150 years ago today, Edward Whymper and his team stood on the top of the Matterhorn, thereby bringing to an end an incredible 10-year period of mountaineering achievements now known as the Golden Age of Alpinism.
To celebrate this landmark, Trek & Mountain releases a special edition of the magazine, in which Stephen Venables retells the dramatic events of the first ascent, which began with success as Whymper and his team reached the summit, but ended in tragedy as four members of the team fell to their death. To complete out Matterhorn coverage, we have a ‘Guide’s guide’ to climbing the Hornli Ridge, as British Mountain Guide James Thacker describes the classic route taken by the first ascentionists to the top.
Elsewhere in the issue, we have an exclusive extract from Sandy Allan’s new book ‘In Some Lost Place’, in which he describes the hours before his and Rick Allen’s summit attempt on Nanga Parbat via the mighty Mazeno Ridge, we have an interview with Keith Partridge, cameraman for such classic films as ‘Touching The Void’ and ‘The Beckoning Silence’, we have a bumper mountain skills section and loads of gear including10 of the best backpacking sacks tested, Rab’s new Flashpoint Jacket, Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z Poles and much more.
