Leo Houlding has been appointed as a Trustee of The Outward Bound Trust, the educational charity that uses the outdoors to help develop young people from all walks of life. 36-year-old Houlding is well-known for his daring first ascents and big wall climbs around the world, and he was recruited into this new appointment by his friend, mentor and mountaineering legend, The Trust’s Deputy Patron, Sir Chris Bonington CVO, CBE, DL.

Leo comments: “It’s a real honour to be asked to be a Trustee of The Outward Bound Trust because adventure in the wilderness has been a massive part of my life. I believe everyone should have access to outdoor learning and challenge. It’s been really kind to me and I’ve travelled the world as a result, so this is an opportunity to try and give something back to young people who may not have had the opportunity to do much of this kind of stuff.”

On his first full day in the role Leo joined pupils and staff from Knox Academy from Haddington, East Lothian to go gorge scrambling.  Commenting on his time with this group: “Outward Bound isn’t just about getting out and experiencing nature and adventure, obviously that’s a huge part of it, but it’s also about working together and developing those other skills that you need to be productive member of society, like looking after your fellow humans, compassion and work as a team to achieve something that you wouldn’t be able to do on your own. This is powerful and inspiring stuff to see in action.”

Leo’s role and responsibilities as Trustee to The Outward Bound Trust will include promoting The Trust’s work and assisting with and advising on fundraising initiatives.
