Shortlist announced for Boardman Tasker Prize

Boardman Tasker RESIZED
Four works of mountain literature have been shortlisted for this year’s Boardman Tasker Prize, chosen from a total of 30 entries.

Created in memory of mountaineers Joe Tasker and Peter Boardman, the prize acknowledges original works of outdoor writing, from first hand mountaineering accounts to historical material and spiritual writing. This year’s contenders include ‘Echoes’, the autobiography of Nick Bullock detailing his dramatic career change from prison officer to professional mountaineer in the search for true freedom, and ‘Shipton and Tilman’, by Jim Perrin, who uses unpublished diaries and journals to tell the story of two pioneering explorers as they established routes in Africa and the Himalaya.

Also in the running are Isabel Suppé’s ‘Starry Night’ which gives a personal account of a dramatic climbing accident in the Bolivian Andes, and ‘Everest, The First Ascent’ (above) by Harriet Tuckey which relays the untold story of her father Griffith Pugh, an expedition doctor who revolutionised the face of British high-altitude mountaineering. Previous winners include British mountaineers Joe Simpson and Andy Kirkpatrick. The winner will be announced at this year’s Kendal Mountain Festival which runs from November 14 – 17.
