A team of climbers led by The North Face athlete Herve Barmasse will shortly set off to climb the north face of Baintha Brakk, a 7285m peak more commonly known as the Ogre, in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. Departing on Friday June 22nd, the team will arrive at base camp in early July after an enduring trek along the Biafo and Sin Gang glacier, where they will acclimatise and wait for a weather window to begin the 55- day long expedition.
Barmasse explains: “Mountaineering exploration is found where there is uncertainty and a confrontation with nature. Ogre fully sums up this concept. It signifies the way I do mountaineering: away from the common routes, from the crowd, looking for myself, and my limits.”
The group of Italian climbers, including Daniele Bernasconi and Martin Peterlongo will attempt the ascent in pure alpine style. In addition to mixed terrain and a 2,500m technical wall climb, the team will face a stay in the hostile environment of Snow Lake, an ice field located at the base of an arctic glacier. Steep and perilously rocky, Ogre is considered to be one of the world’s most difficult peaks to climb, with a climate similar to the North and South Poles and a profile as the highest mountain in the Pammah Muztagh region.
