Money for old rope

Money For Old Rope RESIZED
Climbers based in the Lakes can now recycle old climbing rope in exchange for cash, thanks to a new recycling initiative created by Keswick outdoor retailer George Fisher.

‘Money for Old Rope’, which runs in association with Green Peak Gear, has been set up to ensure climbing gear doesn’t end up in a landfill. Instead, rope that has been withdrawn from use due to weakening through UV exposure, rock abrasion or repeated impact will now be developed into new products.

Retired gear can be taken into the George Fisher store, where it will be recycled – with profits going to the BMC Access and Conservation Trust. As an extra incentive, those taking part will receive a 15% discount towards a new Mammut or Sterling rope.

Jon Wickham, from George Fisher, commented: ‘’Where possible Green Peak Gear remakes items into new products, or redistributes the gear for alternative uses. At present they make rope rugs, dog leads and skipping ropes.”

For those living in other parts of the UK, several Green Peak Gear collection units have been set up for those who simply want to donate old gear, including centres in Kendal, Liverpool, Manchester, Preston, Stockport and Sheffield.
