Peak falls short of Munro status

KNIGHTS PEAK RESIZED
A peak on the Isle of Skye previously classified as a Munro has been demoted following a new measurement taken using GPS technology.

In order to gain Munro status, peaks must reach a height of at least 3,000ft or 914.4m, but according to a recent measurement taken by surveyors on the summit, Knight’s Peak came in just 16.5cm or 6 inches too short to qualify.  The former Munro top, which was defined as a subsidiary of a Munro, is situated on Skye’s Pinnacle Ridge in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides.

Surveyor John Barnard explained: ‘’It doesn’t take anything away from the hill. The hill is still there and it is a fantastic hill. It is just the categorisation that has changed.’’ Known for its challenging ascent, Knight’s Peak is popular with climbers and hillwalkers. In their entirety, there are 282 Munros and 509 tops in Scotland.
