A 12-year-old French boy was killed over the weekend after falling over a 500-foot cliff. The boy and his brother had been skiing off-piste near the French resort of Avoriaz and had apparently got lost in a forest before falling over the concealed cliff.

According to reports, the two boys had been skiing with their father but had set off on their own after getting his approval to return to the resort separately. They seem to have got lost in a forested area and had taken their skis off, before apparently both falling over the side of the cliff. Branches are said to have broken the fall of the younger brother – aged 10 – that survived, and rescuers later found both boys on Sunday morning.

In another incident, a British man was killed after falling from a ridge while skiing off-piste. The man and two friends were skiing near the resort of Oz-en-Oisans and had been trying to make their way back to a marked piste, before all three fell from the ridge.
