Climb Tower Ridge with Adele Pennington, in the latest issue of Trek & Mountain

News, UK news

With some wintry weather finally with us, it’s fitting that our latest issue features the uber classic Ben Nevis route, Tower Ridge, on its cover…

How’s your winter been so far? Up here at T&M Towers in Argyll, we’ve been battered by one storm after another, and getting out onto snow-clad hills has been more challenging than usual – but hunting routes in good condition is all just part of the fun of British winters, right? When the conditions are right though, there’s no place better to be than on Tower Ridge, one of Ben Nevis’ most coveted winter routes, and in our cover feature this month (p22), leading British mountaineer Adele Pennington draws on her many years experience to show how you can climb it. And continuing the winter theme, we have advice on climbing winter ridges and gullies on p36, our Group Test of winter packs on p62 and the secrets of making the perfect snow hole on page 34.

Elsewhere, we have more wonderful photography (not to mention route descriptions) from Alun Richardson with his article on the Adamello High Route in Italy (p50), an interview with award-winning Scottish mountaineer Tim Miller (p44) and an extract from Brian Hall’s brilliant book ‘High Risk’ which details his encounters with the legendary alpinist Alex MacIntyre back in the ’70s (p12).

We hope you enjoy this first issue of 2024 as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together, and we’ll see you again in March for the next edition of T&M. In the meantime, have fun and stay safe!
