Climbers and hillwalkers can now benefit from a new and improved mountain weather forecast thanks to the Met Office’s new online service, making it safer than ever to venture into the hills.
Twice-daily 24 hour forecasts are now displayed for primary mountain areas along with those that have the highest number of visitors. Users can select a specific region to view detailed information about their route, including weather warnings, hazards, location map, weather overview and links to further information services. Pages have also been made printable, allowing walkers to take forecasts with them on expeditions in case of reduced internet access.
Head of the Met Office’s Public Weather Service, Derrick Ryall, said: ‘’ Mountains can be inhospitable and dangerous places if you are not prepared. From one hour to the next, one hill to the next, they can exhibit a dramatic variation in weather conditions, posing a significant risk to walkers’ safety so the more we can do to reduce this risk, the better. Whether it’s a well-planned expedition or a spur-of-the-moment decision to go to the hills, it is important to check the forecast”.
