Conservation efforts in the Scottish Highlands have been given a boost by a multimillion pound grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The £3 million will be used to restore and conserve the rugged landscape of Coigach-Assynt in the north-west Highlands, through Scottish Wildlife Trust led community based projects. Funds will help to restore walking trails, blanket bog and heath moor throughout the wilderness area.
Drew Bennellick, Head of Landscape and Natural Heritage at the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: ”HLF’s landscape-scale funding has helped forge strong local partnerships which have secured the future of some of our most threatened landscapes.’’
The grant comes as part of the HLF’s Landscape Partnership Programme. Now in its 10th year, the scheme works to unite the best interests of communities with those of their local landscapes, and has recently given out over £21 million to projects across the UK.
