Thinking of making the step up from trekking to mountaineering? Need to upgrade your old mountaineering gear? Then this issue’s competition is for YOU! We have teamed up with legendary Italian mountaineering brand, Grivel, to offer a package of climbing hardware perfect for classic mountaineering in the Alps or Scotland.
Grivel are one of the biggest names in mountaineering, with an unparalleled heritage that stretches back 200 years. The company was founded in Courmayeur in 1818, and many of the developments in ice axe and crampon design over the years, are a result of their efforts. Today the company makes everything from helmets, ice axes, crampons, ice screws and karabiners, through to walking poles, rucksacks and harnesses.
With a state-of-the-art solar-powered factory in the Aosta Valley, Grivel is also dedicated to making their products with as little impact to the environment as possible, while staying true to their roots and preserving the skills and expertise they have developed in over two centuries of existence.
Air Tech crampons
The Air Tech is a lightweight semi-rigid crampon ideal for everything from ski touring to classic alpine routes to Scottish winter climbing. It comes in one size and can be adjusted by hand to fit your boots perfectly. Grivel describe the Air Tech as an ’all season’ crampon – it’s super light and takes up a minimum of space as it folds up completely on itself.
Salamander 2.0 helmet
Designed for alpine, rock, and ice climbing, the Salamander 2.0 has an outer shell constructed using ABS, protecting against penetration. The inner layer uses shock-absorbing polystyrene foam. The helmet has extremely efficient air circulation. The helmet comes in one size (54-62) that can be adjusted to fit once on, while the adjustment system tucks into the helmet for compact storage in your pack or haul bag.
G1 Plus ice axe
The G1 is a very light ice axe designed for classic alpinism and incorporates all the characteristics of a Grivel ice axe: a hot forged, one-piece head that provides maximum strength and minimal weight. A specially designed pick makes the axe more comfortable to carry and causes less wear on your gloves. It has a classic, neutral pick with ergonomic design that is comfortable even after many hours of climbing. A natural rubber grip covers the G1 Plus’ shaft and the axes comes in three sizes: 58, 66 and 74cm.
