One of the biggest outdoor trade events of the year – the Outdoor Show held in Friedrichshafen, Germany – takes place this July and Trek & Mountain will be there to bring you all the latest news about upcoming products from the leading brands. However, this year marks 10 years since the first appearance of softshell products at the show, and although softshell jackets in particular have become firmly established in the wardrobes of many outdoor enthusiasts, it’s interesting to reflect on the impact this innovative new type of garment had on its release.
Wind resistant and highly breathable, softshells were seen as a marvel on their release at the annual German event ten years ago, and with many questions surrounding the technology behind the jackets, they were the focus of multiple public workshops. “Softshells really broadsided the markets and media in 2002”, commented Eric Yung, marketing manager of American fabric manufacturer Polartec. “Today there isn’t a single sport or outdoor retailer who doesn’t carry softshells”.
At Outdoor 2012, which will run from July 12 – 15, leading outdoor manufacturers will present new designs of softshell, featuring light linings, cold-proof linings, thick fleece shells for year round use, and fully recyclable environmentally friendly jackets. Other innovative designs will include multilayer waterproof shells, with membranes for increased protection from the elements, shells with extra ventilation and moisture management systems for warmer climates, and stylish new elasticised shells with increased freedom of movement and a figure accentuating silhouette.
We’ll be bringing you live updates from the show here on trekandmountain.com, and we will also be featuring a special Geared Up report in the August 2012 edition of the magazine.
