Keen Envirotrek comes to Peak District

“Help clean up your favourite nature spot, earn a delicious barbeque lunch and enjoy a rewarding afternoon of fun, action pursuits in the great outdoors…” is how the organisers of the first Envirotek event to be held in the UK tout it, and to us it sounds like an absolute winner!

Envirotek is a joint venture between Respect The Mountains and footwear manufacturer Keen, with events taking place across various European mountain destinations since 2009 including Germany, the Netherlands, Austria  and France. This summer,  the inaugural UK  Envirotrek will be held in Bamford in the Peak District on the 5th August 2012. Envirotrek gives people the opportunity to give something back to their environment while enjoying some playtime in the great outdoors.

The Envirotek series come about because a lot of popular mountain destinations are becoming increasingly in need of on-the-ground action to clear them of waste and maintain their natural beauty and ensure they can be enjoyed by future generations. Through last years Envirotrek initiatives, over 500kg rubbish was cleared in 445 hours across four European Countries, with some of the more unusual items collected from their efforts including a US Army oil barrel from  World War Two!

THE DAY
The programme kicks off at 10am, with volunteers walking a track and clearing and collecting rubbish and waste. Group leaders are allocated and all participants will be provided with cleaning and safety equipment and fully briefed with a safety talk.  The clean-up finishes at around 12.30pm, with volunteers being rewarded for their mornings’ efforts with a delicious bbq lunch on the hillside. Participants get to spend the remainder of the afternoon enjoying a range of fun outdoor pursuits organised by the Envirotrek leaders including climbing, mountain biking, canyoning and caving. They’ll even be a chance to win some great prizes including KEEN footwear and gifts for the best or most interesting rubbish found on the hill, with the days event closing at approximately 4pm.
