A new water filter, claimed by its maker Sawyer to be be the lightest and most versatile system on the market, is being launched in the UK. The lightweight water treatment system SP131 uses technology derived from kidney dialysis and its filters use hollow fibre membranes engineered to produce micropores in ‘absolute’ microns, which make it impossible for viruses and bacteria to pass through, according to the maker.
Included in the system are a water filter, three different sized sturdy folding bags and a cleaning device. At 85 grams it can fit into a pocket quite easily, and the system is also specially designed so it can be screwed onto most water bottles if the bags aren’t to hand.
Philip Dean, director of Sawyer’s UK operations said: “There are no products on the UK market that offer this level of protection, yet are as compact and easy to use. We are really excited to be launching the system over here, and think it will prove extremely popular with outdoor enthusiasts.”
He added: “At a retail price of £60 you get a filter able to last a lifetime without the need for replacement cartridges of any kind. This system really does make a good investment, cutting the need to carry around heavy water during a trip and making it safe to drink from rivers, streams and groundwater which can often be contaminated with microorganisms.”
Sawyer’s claims for their new water filter are impressive, and we will be getting our hands on a test sample shortly to bring you our verdict on the device.
