Scottish Adventurer tackles South American 3 Peaks

Ricky Munday RESIZED
Scottish Adventurer Ricky Munday has laid down his latest challenge – The South American 3 Peaks, which requires him to scale the three highest mountains in Argentina’s High Andes.

Munday, 36, will lead an international team on a 38-day expedition to the high plateau of the Puna de Atacama in Northern Argentina this December, while a training expedition to climb Russia’s Mt Elbrus set off earlier this week. Regarding the challenge, Ricky explained: “We’ll face extreme physical conditions. At that altitude, the amount of oxygen available is less than half (43%) compared to sea level, which places severe demands on our cardiovascular and respiratory systems. We’ll also face summit temperatures below minus 30ºC, extremely dry air and strong winds, which are prevalent in the Puna.”

Both the Elbrus and South American climbs will form part of Munday’s long term goal to complete the Triple 7 Summits Challenge – which entails climbing the three highest peaks on each continent – and if completed, would be a world first. The three person team, who are also raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, will climb Monte Pissis (6,795m), Ojos del Salado (6,893m) and Aconcagua (6,959m). Past training expeditions have included trips to Canada’s Rocky Mountains, the highest volcanoes in Mexico, Scotland’s West Highland Way and an ascent of Mr. Roraima in Venezuela.
