Scottish Adventurer Ricky Munday has set off on his latest challenge – The South American 3 Peaks, which requires him to scale the three highest mountains in Argentina’s High Andes.

Following a number of rigorous training expeditions including trips to Canada’s Rocky Mountains, Russia’s Mt Elbrus and an ascent of Pico de Orizaba in Mexico, Munday will now lead an international team on a 38-day expedition to the high plateau of the Puna de Atacama in Northern Argentina. Here he will attempt to make ascents of Monte Pissis (6,795m), Ojos del Salado (6,893m) and Aconcagua (6,959m), while raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Ricky said: “We’ll face extreme physical conditions. At that altitude, the amount of oxygen available is less than half (43%) compared to sea level, which places severe demands on our cardiovascular and respiratory systems. We’ll also face summit temperatures below minus 30ºC, extremely dry air and strong winds, which are prevalent in the Puna.”

Both the Elbrus and South American climbs form part of Munday’s long term goal to complete the Triple 7 Summits Challenge – which entails climbing the three highest peaks on each continent. The team departed before Christmas, and will be sending daily voice updates to their social media channels.
