With the minimalist Focal range, backpack experts Gregory have combined ultra-lightweight recycled materials with a dynamic, comfortable and well-ventilated suspension system. The 58-litre model weighs in at 1.2kg, while the 48-litre model we have to give away weighs just 1.18kg, and both can be reduced by another 80g by stripping away the top pocket.
It all starts with the ultra-light perimeter aluminium frame with fibreglass cross-stay.True to their legacy, however, the Gregory designers did not sacrifice on-the-go comfort to achieve this goal; that’s why they equipped this lightweight touring pack with the dynamic FreeFloat suspension system for maximum ventilation. The innovative mesh back panel reduces contact with the wearer’s body and allows air to flow freely between wearer and pack, yet the weight is still close enough to the centre-of-gravity to ensure stable load management. The seamless, pre-shaped hipbelt transfers the bulk of the weight to the hips, and is designed to mimic the natural movement of the wearer’s body.
Available in two torso lengths, the suspension system is seamlessly covered in mesh material from the hipbelt all the way up the back to the shoulder harness; this material maximises air circulation and has excellent moisture-wicking properties. Feature-wise, the Focal is a classic top loader with a top pocket that features a large zippered compartment, a small underside zippered pocket, reflective attachment points, and a key clip. Front and side stretch-mesh pockets keep essentials like water bottles within easy reach while on the move, while the hipbelt pockets provide more room to stow smaller items. Lightweight compression straps stabilise the load and attach excess gear, while reflective loops are provided for trekking poles or an ice axe.
