Sir Ranulph Fiennes talks about the revolutionary Powermonkey Expedition

Trek & Mountain is just back from the ISPO trade show in Munich, and over the next few days we’ll be writing about some of the highlights from the show – some of the most innovative and exciting products we’ve chosen from literally thousands of new products that were unveiled.

One of the undoubted stars of the show as far we are concerned was the Powermonkey Expedition, a source of ‘infinite power’ while out in the wild from portable power specialists Power Traveller. The Powermonkey Expedition allows users to generate power in five different ways; via hand crank, wind, solar, AC mains and water power – providing power for 5V & 12V electronic devices.

A superbly-designed and innovative bit of kit, the Expedition would seem to be the ultimate solution for expeditions and treks where a constant source of power is required. The key element is the device’s built-in turbine, which when turned by either hand (the ‘wind-up’ handcrank), or by wind or water (via its rotating cups) allows trekkers and mountaineers to generate electricity even when there’s no sun. On top of that, it still has the option of solar power, and you can even charge its battery via wind and solar at the same time. The complete Expedition kit includes a super-powerful Solarmonkey Expedition panel which is also extremely and rugged, built in a brushed aluminium.

The likes of Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Kenton Cool have been involved in the development of the Powermonkey Expedition, and if you think what you’ve heard so far is clever then also bear in mind that the device’s capabilities are set to increase even further in the future with the introduction of power generation from steam, hydrogen and butane gas. It’s no wonder that this product won a coveted ISPO Gold Award at the show.

We’ll be getting our hands on one of the first Powermonkey Expeditions to roll off the production line, so look out for our exclusive test in Trek & Mountain soon!
