A new literary prize entitled ‘The Wainwright Prize for UK Nature & Travel Writing’ has recently been launched – and entry is now open!

Named after legendary British fellwalker Alfred Wainwright, the annual competition aims to recognise original works of writing which focus on the British countryside. The winning title, which should represent Wainwright’s core values; respect for nature, a love of landscape and inspiration of outdoor exploration, will take home £5000. Set up by the National Trust, publishers Frances Lincoln and sponsored by Thwaites Brewery, the prize will be judged by former National Trust Director Dame Fiona Reynolds, in addition to representatives from Countryfile Magazine, The National Trust, The Wainwright Society and Stanfords booksellers.

Editorial Director of Frances Lincoln, Andrew Dunn, said: ‘’Alfred Wainwright’s books have inspired generations of walkers, and shown countless readers a new way to see the British landscape. We are proud to announce The Wainwright Prize, recognising new books which will become classics of nature and travel writing in their turn.”

Entries can include narrative or illustrated non-fiction.
The competition will close on January 13.
